Side Road Junction Design
This is an example of a minor side road junction design for the Connecting Woodside project:
Here are a couple of similar designs used on Bears Way:
The 2nd Bears Way example, outside American Golf, is particularly known for having issues. It's a busier junction than others of its style and the curve in the road restricts drivers' vision. Often drivers will draw into the cycle path, thereby obstructing it, to stop on it to check for traffic. Friends of Bears Way blogged about it and suggested a solution.
The cycle path kerbs also stop considerably short of the junction, allowing drivers to turn across the cycle path at speed and at a greater turning radius. Both of which make it harder to spot someone cycling.
When cycling across such junctions there a notable feeling of being exposed and vulnerable to turning vehicles.
